Offense falters as defense turn the screw on Northwestern
The season opener for Stanford turned out to be a pretty lacklustre one for the offensive side of the ball. Given the pedigree and fire of Coach Broad, it could be fair to say today's game was a disappointment.
With the run stiffled early by some stout line play from Northwestern, Stanford took to the air, and the inaccuracy problem that Franklin had been dealing with since spring reared its head again.
A costly turnover in the redzone, trying to force the ball to Walters on the slant, and numerous missed opportunities showed that this QB just isn't ready to take the team on his shoulders yet.
On the other side of the ball, however, DC Todd Blackmon turned his monsters loose. Bowen was the star as he and his LB collegues partied all night in the Northwestern backfield. Bowen ended the night with 2 sacks, 1 INT and a FF, no doubt earning him national recognition.
As the team stares down the barrel of taking on Oregon in their home opener next Saturday, the offense needs to put its production problems behind itself, as this Oregon offense can put up points fast.
